Practical Tips for Exercising Consistently

We've all been there—creating a detailed plan to work out consistently, only to fail when your motivation dries up.

People like David Goggins might tell you to stop making excuses, embrace the pain, and complete your workouts through sheer willpower.😤 But for us mere mortals, willpower alone isn't enough.

The good news is that working out regularly doesn't have to be difficult. We'll explore some practical tips to help you exercise consistently. 💪

Genetic Variations

Do you struggle to go to the gym consistently like I do? If so, it's not necessarily because of laziness or lack of discipline–gym just might not be your thing.

According to research, genetic factors can affect the types of workouts you excel at (and therefore, enjoy). Some individuals have more fast-twitch fibers that favor strength-based activities, while others have more slow-twitch fibers, making them better at endurance exercises like running.

As such, some people naturally excel in gym workouts, while others thrive in different activities (Genetics) (Med Xpress).

Fitness Isn't One-Size-Fits-All

Find exercises you truly enjoy. There are endless possibilities—try rock climbing, swimming, trapeze yoga, or kangaroo jumping workouts (yes, this is a real thing).

When you discover an activity you find intrinsically fun, consistency will follow.

Recently, I've been having a lot of fun with kickboxing HIIT workouts (it's called 9Rounds if anyone wants to try!).

Start Small and Build Momentum

One of the biggest mistakes people make when starting a workout routine is doing too much too soon. By setting lofty goals, you'll likely fail, get discouraged, and give up.

For instance, start with a 10-minute walk outside or a 5-minute home workout. The key is to build momentum without overwhelming yourself. Each time you show up is a small victory, and it will keep you motivated.

Make It Easy

Removing even small "barriers" can be the difference between exercising and lying on your couch.

For example, you might look for an exercise class near your work, making it convenient to work out. You could also prepare your workout clothes the night before.

I keep fresh workout clothes and boxing gloves in my car. This way, I can head to the boxing gym after work, instead of going home to change first (and I know that once I go home, I'm not coming back out).

Connecting With People

Everything’s better with friends, including workouts. Find someone to gym with, or sign up for a kangaroo jumping class together.😄 In addition, being an accountability buddy for each other can help you stay consistent.

A big reason why I love going to my kickboxing gym is the wonderful people who work there. Walter, the owner, is incredibly passionate about coaching. His energy is infectious and it keeps me coming back for more workouts.

I'll also be starting a fitness program called CrossFit which is known for its strong sense of community and group workouts. Stay tuned for an update! 👊
