The 6 Luxuries in Life to Cherish
1) Time
Time is a luxury we often waste (I'm guilty of this too!).
One of the biggest time drains is screen time: the average Canadian spends 6 hours and 40 minutes on screens daily! Imagine what you could do with that extra time. (Click here for easy digital detox tips)
To use time intentionally, try structuring your day with timeboxing. Without a plan, you'll drift through the day, reacting to whatever demands your attention. This leads to procrastinating on difficult but high-impact tasks and checking off easy but low-impact items.
-Henry David Thoreau
2) Health
One of my long-time patients came in for an eye exam. As a young man, he focused singularly on work. Now in his 80s and retired, he spoke of his poor health that keeps him from doing things he wants to do such as travelling.
Although his life was wonderful overall, he wished he had traveled more and enjoyed more hobbies when he was in good health.
Health is a luxury – a fact we are reminded of when our health is compromised.
If you have good health, appreciate it. If your parents have good health, book that family trip you've been putting off!
3) A Quiet Mind
Modern life is incredibly busy. Sometimes, I feel like a hamster on a wheel, perpetually trying to catch up.
Finding moments of peace and quiet can be transformative. Walk, meditate, or simply savour a hot cup of tea. Even a small moment of peace can make a huge difference in your day.
4) Slow Mornings
When daylight saving recently ended, my wife and I decided to set the alarm an hour earlier than our usual 7am. Due to the time change, we still slept the same amount, but started waking up at 6am. 🙌
Waking up early made our mornings feel slow. Feeling relaxed to start the day truly is a wonderful luxury.
5) Ability to Travel
To travel is to live.
"The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page."
— Saint Augustine
When I travel, I create 1-second videos to capture the trip. Here's my optometry mission trip to Chiapa de Corzo, Mexico.
6) A House Full of Love
Since I travel for work to rural Manitoba, my wife and I spend time apart for weeks at a time.
In these moments of absence, I miss the luxury of coming back to a home filled with warmth and love. Thanks wife! 😄
